Nepal’s Loan Preference Surpasses Savings: Highest percentage of households taking loans is in Madhesh Pradesh

In Nepal, it is a well-known fact that there are many people who prefer taking out loans rather than opening savings accounts. According to the latest data released by the National Statistics Office, there is a significant number of people in Nepal who have opted for loans instead of opening bank accounts.

According to the statistics office, only 25.56% of the total population in Nepal has opened at least one account in a bank or financial institution. Currently, the total population of Nepal is 21,910,564, with 74,091,081 individuals having opened an account in a bank or financial institution, which accounts for 25.56% of the population.

Similarly, out of the total 142,553,051 individuals, 26.42% are males and 24.74% are females who have accounts in banks or financial institutions, as mentioned in the statistics.

Furthermore, among the total number of households in the country, 25.59% of them have taken loans from banks, financial institutions, or cooperatives. Looking at the data based on provinces, the highest percentage of households taking loans is in Madhesh Pradesh with 28.88%, while the lowest is in the Far-Western Province with 21.96%, as mentioned in the statistics released by the National Statistics Office.
