Wholesale Prices of Rice and Cooking Oil Decrease, but Sugar and Spices See Significant Increase Ahead of Dashain

KATHMANDU

The wholesale price of rice and cooking oil has decreased. According to the Federation of Nepalese Food and Wholesale Business Associations, producers themselves have reduced the price of rice and cooking oil even before Dashain. According to the president of the federation, Devendra Bhakta Shrestha, this year producers have reduced the wholesale price themselves, especially when there is not much business.

According to the businessmen, the price of rice has decreased to Rs. 2 per kilogram, which means a decrease of Rs. 50 per 25 kilograms. The price of various types of rice, such as Mansuli, Jira Masino, etc., has also decreased.

Similarly, the price of cooking oil has decreased to Rs. 22 per liter. Businessmen who have been selling oil at a wholesale price of up to Rs. 200 per liter have informed me that the price has reached Rs. 178. According to businessmen, the price of mustard oil has decreased by Rs. 10, while the price of sunflower and soybean oil has decreased by Rs. 22 per liter.

According to the businessmen, the wholesale price of sugar, jaggery, and spices has increased during Dashain. Among them, the price of sugar has increased the most. The sugar that was previously priced at Rs. 80 per kilogram has now reached Rs. 130. This is a significant increase within a month. The price of jaggery has increased from Rs. 550 per kilogram to Rs. 1,350 per kilogram in just one year. Similarly, the price of lentils has increased by Rs. 50 per kilogram, while the price of black gram has increased from Rs. 10 to Rs. 180 per kilogram.
