Directive to ban sale and consumption of tobacco products in public places

Kathmandu. The local levels of Kavrepalanchowk district have been directed to ban the sale and consumption of tobacco products in public places.

A meeting of the district-level disaster management committee comprising the local people’s representatives on Monday directed the government to strictly implement the legal provisions in this regard.

The Committee has directed the local levels to immediately monitor the public places within their area and ban the sale and consumption of tobacco products within 100 meters of the designated area.

Chief District Officer Gopal Kumar Adhikari said that all 13 local levels in the district have been directed to strictly enforce the sale and consumption of tobacco products in the designated areas.

According to the law, the sale

of tobacco products is prohibited in the vicinity of educational institutions, health institutions, child welfare homes, child care centers, old age homes, orphanages and public places designated by the government. CDO Adhikari said that the District Administration Office has already written to the local levels to strictly enforce the legal provisions in this regard.

Bethanchowk Rural Municipality of the district has decided to ban the sale, distribution and use of tobacco products in and around public places.

A public notice issued by the rural municipality stated that the legal provisions related to tobacco control would be strictly implemented. Similarly, the decision is going to be implemented on the basis of a circular received from the District Administration Office, Dhulikhel.

The rural municipality has also urged the traders, entrepreneurs and the general public not to sell, distribute and use tobacco products in all public and sensitive areas of their area.
