Kathmandu. The Janai Purnima festival is being celebrated across the country today by wearing Nav Yagyopavit (Janai) and Rakshabandhan. On the day of Purnima, it is customary for the Vedic Sanatan Dharma to go to rivers, lakes, lakes, ponds and take a bath and tie the Rakshasutra from the Guru Purohit. There is a religious belief that if a person wears the sacred thread and thread (Rakshasutra) duly chanted by the Guru Purohit, one will get protection from negative elements.

For the protection of human beings, Rakshabandhan or thread is tied on the right wrist of the patron by a Brahmin priest chanting the mantra of the Vedic tradition.

It is mentioned in the Vidhana Shastra that on this day, the Tagadhari of the three varnas – Brahmin, Chhetri and Vaishya – should change their Janai (Yajnopavita). For this, from Shravan Shukla Chaturdashi, one shaves one’s head and eats only one meal and sits clean. On the day of Purnima, the Tagadhari goes to ponds, lakes, lakes, rivers and ponds early in the morning and takes a bath with cow dung, ashes, dattuna and saptamriti.

After bathing, the new Janai (Yajnopavita) is changed by offering tarpan to the sages with barley, sesame and kush and chanting according to the Vedic Rudrabhishek method. Along with Arundhati, eight sages – Kashyap, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautam, Jamadagni, Vashishta and Agastya are worshiped and tarpaned, so today is also called Rishitarpani.

According to the Vedic Guru tradition, Yajnopavita i. e. Janai is also known as Brahmasutra or the thread of knowledge. Devotees throng the Pashupatinath temple premises, Ashokbinayak in Basantapur, the banks of the Bagmati River and the Kathmandu Valley from early morning to tie Raksha Bandhan and change the new Janai. On the day of Janai Purnima, eleven types of beans are soaked and sprouted. There is a religious and Ayurvedic belief that eating Kwati in this way prevents diseases in the body, cleanses the stomach and removes heat from within the body while doing agricultural work throughout the rainy season.

Ayurvedic doctors say that drinking the juice of Kwati made by mixing different types of beans increases the immunity of the body. It is believed that it cures diseases like cold and cough. In the Terai region of Nepal, this festival is celebrated by tying rakhi to brothers on this day. There is a social belief that this increases the love relationship between sisters and brothers. Now this tradition has started increasing in the hilly areas as well.

On the day of Shravan Shukla Purnima, fairs are held at Manichud in the northeast part of Kathmandu, Gosainkunda of Rasuwa, Kumbheshwor of Lalitpur, Panchpokhari in Sindhupalchowk, Janakpurdham, Dhanusha, Dhanusha Sagar and Gangasagar of Dhanusha, Dansadhu of Jumla and Trivenidham of Nawalparasi.
