Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Traffic Police have launched a campaign to crack down on drivers violating traffic rules in the Kathmandu Valley in a bid to minimise the risk of road accidents.
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has launched a special drive after it came to the conclusion that drunk drinking, drunk and traffic rule violation were among the major causes behind the increasing number of road accidents in the recent days.
Kathmandu Traffic Police Chief and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nawaraj Adhikari himself has been mobilized on the roads along with his team while the team sitting in the ‘control room’ has been providing information about which number one vehicle has violated the rules.
The traffic police have started checking at various places targeting the drivers of public vehicles in the morning and especially in the afternoon and evening.
At present, traffic police are deployed in the main thoroughfares, busy roads and places where accidents are high in the capital to check whether the drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Senior Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Adhikari said the campaign has been launched with priority to minimize road accidents and passenger safety. According to him, a driver is responsible for dozens of passengers in public transport, so a small carelessness of the driver can lead to a big accident.
“A driver is carrying dozens of passengers. If the same driver drives drunk or negligent driving, who will be responsible for the accident? Our main objective is to reduce road accidents. Therefore, we will take a stern action against drunk and drunk drivers. ‘
As part of the special campaign launched by the Traffic Police, dozens of drivers of public vehicles have been found drunk and drunk driving so far. According to the office, the arrested drivers have been fined as per the traffic rules and necessary legal process has been initiated.
Meanwhile, the Traffic Police is preparing to recommend to the concerned body to revoke the driving licenses of drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, crashing into road dividers and endangering the lives of passengers.
Kathmandu Traffic Police Chief and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Adhikari said that stern action has come to be taken as it would not be possible to reduce road accidents until the trend of reckless driving was controlled. “The tendency of careless driving is no longer tolerable. In such a situation, it is not enough to deduct the fine, but if necessary, the process of revoking the driver’s license is initiated. ‘
Traffic Police Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police (SP) Naresh Raj Subedi said that the traffic police have also started taking strict action against drivers violating traffic rules and especially those not abiding by traffic lights. According to Subedi, the drivers who violate the traffic lights and turn on the red light will be kept under special surveillance. “We have started taking action against the drivers who drive without stopping when the red light is on, and those driving in broad daylight,” he said. Dozens of drivers of four-wheelers and two-wheelers have been taken to task. ‘
Traffic police chief Adhikari said such checking campaign would be continued in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley in the coming days as well and drivers would be urged to abiding by traffic rules, not to drive under the influence of alcohol and to ensure safe travel.
