Kathmandu. Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-UML) KP Sharma Oli has said that the culprits should be brought to book after a serious investigation into the incidents that took place on September 7 and 24, 2002. The then Prime Minister Oli said this while issuing a press statement.

In a statement, Oli paid tribute to the youths who lost their lives in the line of fire during the youth demonstration on September 23 and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. He also paid tribute to the police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty in the subsequent incidents.

Stating that it was natural for the citizens to present their expectations, dissatisfaction and demands before the government in a democracy, Oli said the constitution has guaranteed the right to peaceful assembly, protest and formation of the government through democratic means, reconstitute and change the government.

Recalling that the then Council of Ministers under his leadership had decided to form a commission to investigate into the incident, lift the temporary ban on social media and provide compensation to the families of the victims, Chairman Oli said in the statement that the then Home Minister resigned taking moral responsibility for the incident.

“The incidents of arson, vandalism and attacks on the President’s House, the Prime Minister’s Official Residence, Singha Durbar, Parliament House, Supreme Court, offices of political parties and public and private properties on September 24 should be taken as a sad moment,” he said.
