In the process of creating ‘content’, Roshan himself became ‘content’… (Video Briefing)

Artha Sarokar

Kathmandu. On Sunday, a news broke through social media. YouTuber arrested for abusing PM in the name of ‘content’

The arrested is Roshan Pokharel of Phalgunanda Rural Municipality-7 in Panchthar district. He has been running a YouTube channel called ‘Hades’ and has been broadcasting his content through this channel. But lately, he has been in police custody after he aired insulting and provocative statements abusing top political leaders, including Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen). He was arrested by the Panchthar Police based on an investigation by the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police.

As soon as the news of the YouTuber’s arrest became public, social media became heated. One side is saying that it is good to stop such anarchists by saying ‘it is right’, while the other is saying ‘let the government speak’, saying that it is an interference on the freedom of expression.

Freedom of speech is a democratic right. But does it mean that you can say whatever you want? Can you show anything in the name of creating content and selling content? Can you make statements that disturb social harmony, disturb and provoke social harmony? No, I can’t.

There are some words in the video released by Pokharel, what to listen to? I can’t even think of listening. So much so that his video is not even possible to watch with the family. And is there any justification for giving space to such nonsensical content and crying ‘not allowed to speak’? What will society learn if it does not regulate such non-existent speech in the name of content? What will your children learn from watching this video? Don’t you care?

Freedom is never absolute, loose, uncivilized, and immodest. Responsibility is attached to freedom. Your speech is safe as long as it does not directly hurt the dignity, dignity and social harmony of others. Moreover, producing provocative, sensational, and sometimes hateful content for the greed of views, likes and shares is not a democracy or the right to speak in a democracy.

On the other hand, the role of the state is equally sensitive. The law needs to be used, but it should not be misused. If every criticism is interpreted as a crime, it strikes at the very heart of democracy. Sometimes, journalists are arrested for free. There are many cases where journalists have been tortured by arresting them for reasons that should not have been arrested. We need to be sensitive to such issues.

And, in this way, there is no need to cry much if a few camera owners are arrested for provoking the society, disturbing social harmony, assassinating someone’s character and spreading confusion in the society. It’s an exercise to make citizens responsible. Yesterday, when KP Oli, Prachanda and Sher Bahadur Deuba were the prime ministers, those who made hate speeches were arrested. There is no point in linking it to the government’s work, success or failure. (Video)
