Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Industries and businesses along the border have started to flourish after the Nepal government tightened the border points for the past few days to control the import of goods from the Indian border market without customs duty. Due to this, the businessmen of Nepal have also expressed happiness.
KATHMANDU: Traders and businessmen of Sunauli border point have expressed happiness over the mandatoriness of customs duty on goods worth more than Rs 100 in the name of domestic use. They claim that this will not only increase Nepal’s revenue but will also provide relief to local entrepreneurs. Locals and other citizens, who often do not visit Nepali shops and markets, have now been attracted to the Nepali market after the customs duty on imported goods from other shores became mandatory.
They feel that this has not only promoted the domestic market but has also reduced the tendency to go to India for shopping. Entrepreneurs say that the past trend of going to India for small and big purchases has been discouraged.
Although there was a lot of Nepali market in this area, there was not much activity. The state’s customs and revenue also declined because the local people went to the other side of the market i. e. the Indian market to buy small and big goods.
Now, for the past few days, the market in Nepal has started to move. They argue that due to the policy of imposing customs duty on goods worth more than one hundred rupees, the purchase of goods from there has increased in the Nepali market.
Chamber of Commerce, Rupandehi’s President Sachin Rokka said that mandatory customs duty on goods worth more than Rs 100 is positive for industrialists and entrepreneurs. “This is an issue that we have been raising our voice from the beginning. “We need to stop the continuous smuggling,” he said. The smuggling that takes place at night should also be controlled as customs duty has to be paid for bringing goods worth more than one hundred rupees. ’
He said that those who bring goods in the name of domestic use several times a day should be monitored and strict. Rokka has demanded that the illegal smuggling of goods should be controlled. The job of some people who move in this way is to move goods from there. This not only reduces the trade and purchase in the Nepali market but also reduces the customs duty that Nepal receives. It has also been the case for a long time that the small and big shops in Nepal have not been able to continue their business.
Similarly, former president of Siddhartha Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Rupandehi, Bishnu Prasad Sharma, underscored the need to change the perception of Nepali consumers that goods are cheaper in India. He said that some goods are cheaper in Nepal than in India. He said that this work done by the government is welcome. But he said that illegal goods should be controlled.
Thakur Kumar Shrestha, president of Lumbini Province of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), said the enforcement of the customs would not only increase revenue but also make the domestic market vibrant. He believes that if the business flourishes in the country, it will also contribute to the country’s economy. “It has also been found that people are going across the border to buy drugs in the pretext of going to buy goods. “, he said.
Thakur said that such a move by the state would promote local market as Nepali consumers go to the Indian market not only near the border but also from hilly districts to buy goods. “This rule is the same as before, now the government has implemented it. Everyone should abide by this rule and citizens should cooperate with the government. “, he said.
Customs Officer and Information Officer at the Bhairahawa Customs Office, Belhiya, Rupandehi, Uddhav Dhungana, said that they have been collecting customs duty by convincing those bringing goods worth more than Rs 100 to pay customs duty. “This is the old rule, we have been asking those bringing goods from India across the border not to come back now. “, he said.
He said that the general public is looking at the small amount of goods that the passengers bring for their own homes. However, he said that customs duty is levied on those who bring goods as per the law. The present government has adopted the customs duty of Rs 100 along the border. According to them, the locals who have been transporting goods for a long time were a little uncomfortable in the beginning, but now they have gradually become accustomed. This rule was there in the past, but due to lack of strictness in the customs, the goods were allowed to enter without customs. However, the locals say that this is not the case now.
